Practical Action is a UK based international development organisation works for technology justice andwellbeing to reduce poverty. We work through regional and country offices in Latin America, Africa, and Asia to make a difference in the lives of poor people by transforming the technologies from idea to reality. In Bangladesh, focus of our work is around agriculture, extreme poverty, disaster risk reduction, climate change adaptation, access to markets, water, sanitation and waste management and energy. Our distinctive practical approach includes wellbeing, partnership, specialized knowledge services and policy engagement.
Practical Action was founded in 1966 by the eminent economist E. F. Schumacher, author of ‘Small is Beautiful’, and has built up a reputation as a respected organization that leads the sector on issues of technology and poverty reduction.
In Bangladesh, Practical Action started its work in 1990. Particularly, in Disaster Risk Reduction(DRR) and Climate Change areas, we are focusing our actions on building resilient livelihoods in agricultural and non-agricultural sectors, protecting lives, health and assets through infrastructural (resilience house, water structure etc.) interventions, improving efficiency and access to “weather forecasting and early warning” systems and encouraging local innovations to cope with changing environment. We have been working to reduce the risk of disasters and building resilience of marginalised groups and communities by mainstreaming DRR into all development processes. Very recently we have started a multi-country work on flood resilience index development in riverine areas to contribute to a global, regional, national change agenda.
