Context

Global energy transition is imperative in our fight for climate change. However, its pathways and processes can be unfair, unjust, or inequitable across various sections of society. While the world collectively pushes for decarbonisation, the ground realities of communities, especially in the Global South and the groups that will be impacted the most by the energy transition, require a transition that is not only green, but also just and people-centric.

Therefore, a people-centric energy transition ensures that the shift away from fossil fuels supports the transition of livelihoods and ensures equity. It places the needs, voices, and rights of workers, women, youth, indigenous peoples, informal sector actors, and local communities at the heart of transition strategies. This perspective is especially critical in countries where social, economic, and energy access disparities are deeply entrenched.

As part of the G20 South Africa Presidency, the Civil 20 (C20) working group on ‘Just Energy Transition, Environment and Climate Sustainability’ (JET-CES-WG-14) is committed to ensuring that the G20 process recognises and responds to these aspects of equity and just transition dimensions.

About the Webinar

As a key step in shaping our collective civil society input to the G20, Vasudha Foundation (as co-facilitator of WG-14), in collaboration with Climate Action Network South Asia (CANSA), is organising a multi-stakeholder webinar to gather insights, perspectives, and recommendations from CSOs and experts across regions.

Objectives
  • Serve as a platform to deliberate on the priorities, barriers, and enablers of just energy transition, especially in the Global South
  • Help inform and enhance the “ask” that the working group on JET will submit to the C20 and G20
  • Gather insights to strengthen the policy brief on ‘Just Energy Transition’ that has been developed for C20-G20
  • Explore global good practices, case examples, and frameworks that can be scaled or adapted
  • Facilitate cross-regional learning from Asia, Southeast Asia, Latin America, and Africa
  • Contribute to a more robust, inclusive, and people-first articulation of energy transitions within the G20 framework
