On November 11, global delegates gathered in Baku, Azerbaijan, for COP29, focusing on urgent climate action. CAN South Asia emphasizes that limiting global warming to 1.5°C, enabling adaptation, and addressing unavoidable climate impacts require substantial climate finance.
South Asian groups called for a $5 trillion yearly funding plan, focusing on grants instead of loans, with at least $1 trillion for helping vulnerable communities and supporting a fair transition. CAN South Asia secretariat representatives participated in several side events, on loss and damage, just energy transition, climate finance, circular economy, adaptation, and urban transformation, as well as two press conferences. Here’s a brief round-up of the events at COP.
“The climate crisis impacts those least responsible the most. For highly vulnerable South Asian countries, COP29 is a chance for the Global North to step up with dedicated public funding to support those most affected.” — Sanjay Vashist, Director, CAN South Asia
